The Hollow Book

Difficulty Easy 0-25 €

In movies, a classic element for hiding a compromising object is a hollow book. We can't let this idea slip by without using it to deliver a gift in a surprising way.

Some might be lucky enough to find a hollow wooden or plastic book in a store. In that case, you've got all the work done. If you don't have anything like that, you'll have to make the hollow book by hand. Of course, dedicating a book to such a purpose is a crime against universal literature, although it's true that some books out there deserve this fate. My recommendation is to take advantage of a book fair to get the cheapest and most boring book you can find, as long as it has suitable dimensions for what you intend to gift. Use a cutter to hollow it out and have some patience. Once you've made the hollow, you can fix the pages to the walls of the hollow, so the book ends up fulfilling its final function as a box-container as best as possible.

I once used this idea to give a gift. I think I remember the chosen book was about Catalan nationalist theories by Jordi Pujol, which was on super sale at a book fair. The expression after the person unwrapped the gift was unforgettable, especially that moment when they tried to put on a brave face to show appreciation for the present received. Then, when they opened the book and saw its interior, an expression of happiness multiplied by a thousand appeared due to the relief of realizing that, this time more than ever, beauty was on the inside.
